Gifted Education Certificate
The University of Lynchburg’s gifted education certificate program fulfills the Virginia Department of Education’s requirements for the Add-On Teaching Endorsement in the Education of Gifted Learners. The program can be completed in one year and provides licensed educators with the skills needed to provide quality education and develop differentiated curricula for gifted students.
This program is designed to meet the needs of:
- General education teachers seeking advanced training related to the teaching of, curriculum development, and assessment of gifted learners.
Upon completion of this certificate program, students will be able to:
- Add the gifted education endorsement to their license.
- Understand the characteristics of gifted students.
- Understand the integration of gifted education and general education.
- Use diagnostic and prescriptive assessment approaches to identify gifted students.
- Apply theories and principles to appropriately differentiate the curriculum to accommodate the learning aptitudes of gifted students.
- Understand the principles of differentiated curriculum for effective program planning and evaluation.
- Understand the contemporary issues and research in gifted education.
- Proficiency in grammar, usage, and mechanics and their integration into all forms of communication.
- Proficiency in pedagogy to incorporate writing as an instructional assessment tool.

- Must hold an active teaching license in the state of Virginia.
- Prior completion of a bachelor’s degree.
