Embark on a transformative journey that goes beyond traditional classroom boundaries with our study abroad programs.

Why Should I Study Abroad?

In today’s global world, employers place an ever-increasing importance on having a globally and culturally competent workforce. There is no better time to gain the cross-cultural skills and understanding employers seek than as a college student in a study abroad program. Upon return, study abroad students rave about their experiences and affirm that what they gained from their time overseas far outweighs the costs involved.

  • Enhance cross-cultural communication skills
  • Learn or improve your foreign language skills
  • Discover and learn about global interdependence from cultural, economic, historical, and political perspectives
  • Enjoy study and travel experiences you can’t get any other way
  • Make life-long friends across the globe!

Options for Study Abroad

No matter your major, you can participate in a study abroad experience. Opportunities range from short trips during winter or spring break to semester- or year-long programs.

We offer multiple faculty-led, exchange, and direct enrollment study abroad programs designed to prepare undergraduate and graduate students for competitive careers in a global society. Our partnerships with colleges and universities around the world make study abroad accessible for more students. Lynchburg students are more than twice as likely to study abroad as their peers at similar schools. You can join them!

Faculty-led Programs

Vietnam and Cambodia: Comparative Religious Ethics

Jan. 1-19, 2025

This program includes one course of three credit hours.

Comparative Religious Ethics (3) (Counts for DELL General Education requirement + WE credit)

Exchange Programs

Exchange Programs – University of Lynchburg

The University of Lynchburg study abroad exchange program allows you to enroll in classes at one of the University’s sister schools. You’ll earn transfer credits for the classes you take if you receive a letter grade of “C” or better.

External financial aid is not available for these programs, as the student is not registered at the University of Lynchburg, but rather at the exchange institution.

You will pay your tuition directly to the University of Lynchburg. It is your responsibility to cover your international airfare and living costs while abroad — room and board and personal expenses.

If you are interested, schedule an appointment with our office to begin the application process.

Semester and Other Programs

Each year several University of Lynchburg students elect to study abroad for a semester or academic year.

There are various programs that provide students the opportunity to:
  • complete an internship
  • live with a host family to practice language skills and enhance the cultural experience
  • take classes at a foreign university with the host country and other international students
  • travel independently while abroad
Students who wish to study abroad for a semester/academic year have three options:
  • An exchange program through one of our sister schools: Fachhochschule Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences in Dornbirn, Austria; Laval University in Quebec City, Canada; and Hannam University in Daejeon, South Korea
  • A program offered by third-party Study Abroad Providers
  • A program managed by another college or university

University of Lynchburg students have studied abroad in Argentina, Australia, Austria, Chile, Costa Rica, the Czech Republic, Hungary, India, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Panama, Poland, South Korea, Spain, and the United Kingdom.

If you are interested in a semester/year-long or summer program not sponsored by the University, make an appointment with our office to discuss your options, financial aid, and scholarship opportunities, and to learn about the University’s policies and procedures for these programs.

Fachhochschule Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences (FH-V)

Dornbirn, Austria

Students enrolled in Lynchburg’s  College of Business have the opportunity to spend the fall semester at the College’s sister school in Austria.

The coursework, conducted in English and taught by a global team of faculty, focuses on international business and management. You’ll take classes with Austrian and international students. The university also offers a German language course. There is a residence hall for international students.

“We have many different professors from different parts of the world teaching our classes, which gives us different world perspectives we wouldn’t get otherwise. There are 60 international students here this semester, not including the local Austrian students, and we all work very closely together in groups regularly, and they, too, bring many different perspectives to the table.” – Austin Jones ’10 (Management)

Hannam University

Hannam University

Daejeon, South Korea

Hannam University’s Center for International Relations (CIR) offers University of Lynchburg students the opportunity to study in South Korea for a full semester.

Courses at the University’s Linton Global College are taught in English, though students are encouraged to enroll in a Korean language class during their studies at Hannam.

Lynchburg students may also spend part of the summer exploring a new culture and way of life by attending Hannam University’s Korean Studies Summer Program (KSSP). Students enroll in a 3-credit course focusing on Korean language and culture. During the KSSP, students will take part in cultural activities and excursions with their Korean “buddies” — an excellent way to experience Korean culture and make lifelong friends.

Students enrolled in the KSSP do not have to pay tuition to the University of Lynchburg but are expected to cover their international airfare and personal expenses while in South Korea.

For more information, please visit the Hannam University website.
