Starting this fall, the University of Lynchburg will offer two new graduate certificates for nonprofit professionals interested in advancing their careers: a Certificate in Nonprofit Marketing and Fundraising and a Certificate in Nonprofit Management.
Each certificate requires a total of three classes, or nine credit hours, taught by faculty in the Master of Arts in Nonprofit Leadership Studies.
“The graduate certificates are designed to meet the supplemental needs of professionals and give students specialized training in a particular area,” said Director of Graduate Studies Savannah Cook. “Earning a graduate certificate might be just what you need to reach your personal and career goals, all while potentially preparing you for a full degree in the future.”
The Certificate in Nonprofit Marketing and Fundraising is designed for individuals who wish to increase their skill and understanding in strategic nonprofit marketing and fundraising.
“This certificate integrates state-of-the-art theory and practice,” said Dr. Jimmy Roux, who directs the Master of Arts in Nonprofit Leadership Studies.
At the end of the certificate program, students will be able to create crisis communication plans, build and analyze social media plans, and market their nonprofit through social media. They will also have improved their conflict management skills and will have a thorough understanding of the grant writing and fundraising processes.

The Certificate in Nonprofit Management is for individuals who wish to increase their skill and understanding in managing and leading nonprofit organizations. Here, too, theory and practice go hand-in-hand to build a solid program, Roux said.
Students who complete the program will be able to identify and practice leadership skills and behaviors necessary for effective nonprofit management. They’ll also be able to determine effective board management policies and procedures, identify current issues in staff management, and understand nonprofit budgets and financial statements, including how to analyze the 990 nonprofit tax form for financial efficacy.
