University of Lynchburg’s annual “Night at the Movies” concert is “Back in the Saddle, Again!” This time it’s coming to viewers from a computer screen.

The concert will be available on the music department’s YouTube channel at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 30.

Oeida Hatcher, associate dean of the School of Visual & Performing Arts, said it’s a Western movie theme because they performed a Western show last year and were asked by many students and community members to expand on the theme.

“Since we were forced to do a digital concert this year due to COVID-19, we kept the theme going and will be presenting some movie film interwoven in the concert with our University students, professors, and community musicians playing the background music scores,” she said.

The digital concert has a theme, dialogue, and performances like a live concert with lots of moving musical parts.

“It is more of a musical production than a concert,” Hatcher said. It will feature the Wind Symphony and Orchestra and Community Big Band and include music from a variety of iconic Western movies, including “City Slickers,” “Annie Get Your Gun,” “Saddle Up!,” “Red River Valley,” “Silverado,” “Desperado,” and “Happy Trails.”

In addition to performances by the Wind Symphony and Orchestra, directed by Hatcher, and the Community Big Band, directed by Dr. Chris Magee, there will be vocal performances by Madison Wares ’19 and Sloane Kelly ’22, and a return of the Old West Cowboy Band featuring strings, brass, harmonica, and steel guitar.
