Lynchburg student competing in U21 field hockey world cup
University of Lynchburg midfielder Khanyisile Mzizi ’27 is representing her home country of Zimbabwe at the 2023 International Hockey Federation Junior World Cup, which began Tuesday, Nov. 29, in Santiago, Chile.
Mzizi, from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, is playing for the U21 team in the World Cup. Zimbabwe is in Pool B with South Korea, Spain, and Argentina.
Zimbabwe lost to South Korea 6-0 on Tuesday morning. Mzizi and her teammates square off next against Spain at 8 a.m. EST on Friday, Dec. 1.

Mzizi was named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference’s Rookie of the Year in 2023 and landed on the conference’s first team after scoring nine goals with seven assists as a first-year. She helped the Hornets win their 22nd conference title, go undefeated in conference play, and to the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament.
She scored the game-winning goal in overtime during the Round of 16 against York (Pennsylvania) to punch Lynchburg’s sixth ticket to the NCAA quarterfinals.
Mzizi is not the only Lynchburg student-athlete to compete in Chile on a global scale this month. Sophomore swimmer Mei White won gold at the 2023 Parapan American Games on Nov. 24.
