The Lynchburg-based nonprofit Love Heals will hold a benefit concert featuring the band Oceanic at the University of Lynchburg on Friday, Sept. 4. The concert will be held on the Dell in front of Hopwood Hall. Gates open at 6 p.m. and the concert begins at 7 p.m.
Admission is free and open to the public, but donations are encouraged. Donations can be made through the Love Heals giving platform.
Food and drinks will be available for purchase. The event has a clear bag policy.
All donations and a percentage of concessions proceeds will benefit Lynchburg Cares, the University’s crisis fund, which “provides financial assistance to faculty, staff, and students facing emergencies.” Lynchburg Cares is managed by the University’s Spiritual Life Center.
Lynchburg Cares was created in 2009 as an organic response by coworkers to an employee in need. Since then, it has provided financial assistance to 1,096 individuals. Recipients apply for the funds, which are granted on a case-by-case basis and can cover a variety of emergent financial needs, such as medical expenses, housing, food, or utilities.
“It speaks to [Lynchburg’s] culture that we’re willing to support one another,” said the Rev. Dr. Nathan Albert, assistant vice president of belonging and University chaplain.
Love Heals, which has a mission “to mobilize communities around individuals experiencing medical and financial hardship,” will host the concert.
The concert’s headliner is Oceanic, which has been described as an “indie pop band with a strikingly unique yet refined sound that evokes introspection and nostalgia.”
Catapult City, an indie rock band from Central Virginia, will open.
