The Wind Symphony Orchestra concert

There’s a little something for everyone on the University of Lynchburg’s music department offerings this fall.

On Friday, Sept. 17, the music events kick off with the concert, “Honoring Our President: Sounds and Songs of Scotland” in Sydnor Performance Hall. The concert, part of Parents and Family Weekend, will feature the Wind Symphony, Orchestra, and Community Big Band; the musical theatre ensemble Curtain Call; and the student dance troupe Dance Works.

The concert pays homage to Lynchburg’s president, Dr. Alison Morrison-Shetlar, a native of Scotland, and will include music by John Philip Sousa, Clare Grundman, James Horner, Lloyd Conley, Malcolm Arnold, and others.

In keeping with the theme, Curtain Call will perform a jazz version of “Almost Like Being in Love,” from the musical “Brigadoon,” and Dance Works will perform a Scottish dance.

That same evening, the Concert Choir and Lynchburg Singers will perform songs, including “My Spirit is Uncaged” by Paul Rardin, with text by Walt Whitman, and “We Are…” by Dr. Ysaye M. Barnwell.

Another highlight of the fall season is “Duty, Honor, Country: An American Salute Orchestra/Wind Symphony Fall Concert” on Nov. 11 and 12. Lynchburg’s Wind Symphony and Orchestra will feature the Community Big Band and be narrated by Sean Sandrock of Eureka College. Tickets will be required for this event.
