Claytor Nature Center has been awarded a Bedford Community Health Foundation grant for a new automated external defibrillator, or AED, to be installed in its education building.
The grant is part of a larger initiative by staff to create a safer, healthier environment that considers the health and ages of all guests. The grant also provides funding for two comprehensive first aid kits to be located on site.
“We can’t thank the folks at BCHF enough for their generosity,” said Claytor Nature Center Director Jennifer Wills. “This AED could very well save lives and will absolutely make the center a safer place for visitors. The first aid kits will be available during programming to bandage up scrapes or take the sting out of a sting.
“Claytor is an excellent place for taking a screen break, staying fit and active, and learning something new. We hope you visit soon!”
The 18th century farm and farmhouse, through the vision and generosity of the late A. Boyd Claytor III, were given to the University of Lynchburg to serve as an education and research center for environmental study and to preserve the land for future generations.
Located at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Claytor encompasses freshwater streams, woodlands, wetlands, grasslands, rare plants, wildlife, and a portion of the Big Otter River. A hiking trail system, small-group campground, and amphitheater are other features of the property.
