“Ty brings all the qualities that fit the position,” the outgoing executive director said in a press release. “Ty understands the changing landscape in high school athletics and activities as he leads the membership in building upon the League’s strengths to meet the challenges ahead.”

Gafford, who has a bachelor’s degree in history and a master’s in educational leadership from Lynchburg, previously served as the VHSL’s assistant director of compliance. He brings 30 years of experience in education and leadership to his new position, having been a high school principal, assistant principal, history teacher, and basketball coach.

He also played basketball at Appomattox County High School.

“Ty was a principal in both Campbell County and Lynchburg City,” said Dr. Roger Jones, professor emeritus and director of the University of Lynchburg’s Center for Innovative Leadership. “He has always focused on student success.

“He will bring energy, passion, and curiosity to his new role with the VHSL. We are proud of his past accomplishments and look forward to seeing his leadership opportunities expand at the state level. We wish him well!”
