The University of Lynchburg has transitioned its Master of Education in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling programs to a Master of Science degree. This change aligns with the growing emphasis on evidence-based mental health care and enhances interdisciplinary collaboration within the University’s School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

“Mental health care is health care, and this shift to an MS degree is a recognition of that fact,” said Dr. Sara Bailey, program director for Lynchburg’s counselor education programs.

“Additionally, shifting the degree designation from a Master of Education to a Master of Science better aligns us with our new institutional home within the School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

“The opportunities for collaboration between our counseling programs and the other health sciences programs are limitless, and we are excited for what’s to come.”

This transition underscores the increasing demand for mental health professionals with strong scientific, research, and clinical training. The new MS designation better reflects the rigorous curriculum designed to prepare students for counseling licensure and career advancement in clinical and educational settings.

Graduates of the MS in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and MS in School Counseling programs will benefit from a curriculum focused on evidence-based practices, research, and clinical application.

This degree equips graduates with the skills and credentials needed for licensure and leadership roles in mental health care.

Applications are open for the MS in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and MS in School Counseling. To learn more about the programs, admission requirements, and how to apply, visit the program webpages or contact the Office of Graduate Success at [email protected]
