The University of Lynchburg has launched two new graduate programs designed to meet the evolving needs of today’s professionals: the Master of Science in Athletic and Coaching Education and the Build-Your-Own Master of Education

Both programs reflect the University’s commitment to innovation, flexibility, and career-focused education.

The 100% online Master of Science in Athletic and Coaching Education prepares coaches to lead with strategy, character, and purpose. Students will gain advanced knowledge in performance analytics, athlete development, sport psychology, and leadership, which will prepare them to make meaningful contributions at all levels of sport.

“This program was built for professionals who want to do more than coach — they want to mentor, lead, and elevate teams through research-based practices and intentional leadership,” said Dr. Stephen Smith, dean of the School of Professional and Applied Sciences and program director.

“We’ve created a program that integrates the science of coaching with the human impact of mentorship.”

The Build-Your-Own MEd program is a customizable, 100% online degree. It allows educators to tailor their learning journey by selecting two or more areas of concentration, including:

  • School Leadership
  • Special Education
  • Gifted Education
  • Reading Science
  • Instructional Design and Technology

With a stackable certification model, leading to eligibility for multiple VDOE endorsements, the program provides educators with both professional development and recognized credentials. It also includes a 40% Aspiring Educator Discount, making it an affordable pathway for advancing careers.

The Build-Your-Own MEd program is the result of a collaborative effort conducted by experienced University faculty and educational leaders, including Dr. Mac Duis, Dr. Holly Gould, Dr. Lucinda Spaulding, and Dr. Stefanie Copp.

“Our goal was to rethink the traditional MEd and build something that puts choice back into the hands of educators,” Duis said. “Whether they’re looking to lead their school, expand into reading specialization, or innovate in instructional design, this program lets them tailor their education to their passion.”

Gould added, “This is more than just a master’s degree. It’s an opportunity for teachers to advance their credentials while remaining in the classroom — and with our Aspiring Educator Discount, it’s also an affordable investment in their future.”
