During the 2025 Graduate Commencement ceremony on Friday, May 16, Francis “Frank” Lawrence Csorba ʼ23, ʼ25 MPH was honored with the presentation of a posthumous Master of Public Health degree.

Csorba was a standout track and cross country athlete at the University of Lynchburg, whose legacy continues to inspire. Despite early health challenges, including severe asthma and a rare allergy to his own sweat, Csorba defied medical expectations to become a national-caliber distance runner.

His relentless work ethic and determination led him to anchor Lynchburg’s distance medley relay team to victory at the 2024 NCAA Division III Indoor Championships, setting a new meet record.

His journey from a small town in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, to collegiate athletic success is a testament to his resilience and passion for running. Tragically, Csorba passed away in April 2024, just before the outdoor track season and while enrolled in Lynchburg’s Master of Public Health program.

Csorba’s sudden passing deeply impacted his family, friends, and the entire University of Lynchburg community, leaving a profound sense of loss. In recognition of his enduring influence and extraordinary determination, the University faculty and administration made the decision to award him a posthumous Master of Public Health.

Immediately following the Commencement keynote address, University President Dr. Alison Morrison-Shetlar took the podium.

“Frank left a legacy, his footprint, on our campus that will never be forgotten,” Morrison-Shetlar said.

A moment of silence was held in Csorba’s honor.

When Morrison-Shetlar spoke again, her voice was audibly choked, holding back tears.

“Csorba family, few can imagine the pain you must feel, but take comfort in knowing your Lynchburg family loves you,” Morrison-Shetlar said. “We are grateful for Frank and will hold him in our hearts always.”

Csorba’s family joined Morrison-Shetlar in front of the LOVE sign photo backdrop for the presentation of the degree. In a touching moment, Morrison-Shetlar hugged each member of the Csorba family.

The presentation of the degree was met with a standing ovation  from all that attended the ceremony.
