The University of Lynchburg raised $529,989 — nearly twice as much as last year — on its 10th-annual GiveDay, held Thursday, April 17. There were 1,070 total donors, 218 of whom gave to Lynchburg for the first time.

“GiveDay was a tremendous success, and the generosity of the donors will have a significant impact,” said Shawn Wood, assistant vice president of advancement. “It’s truly heartwarming to see such strong support meeting important needs and creating a positive legacy for future generations.

“A heartfelt and sincere ‘thank you’ to all of our donors, whether it was their first gift or a part of their generous estate plans.”

More than $250,000 in matches and challenges were met on GiveDay, including $150,000 — more than ever before, according to Wood — in board of trustee challenges for The Lynchburg Fund.

Another highlight of GiveDay was a gift to The Lynchburg Fund made by alumna Mollie Ledford ’78 and her legacy family, which includes sister Susan Gardner Bowers ’75 and children Alison Mayhew Tuck ’09, ’11 MA and Brice Mayhew ’12.

Ledford’s late husband, Ben Mayhew, worked in Lynchburg’s advancement office for many years, and has an endowed scholarship in his name.

“The Lynchburg Fund is the one fund that supports our entire institution,” said Erika Mork, director of institutional giving. “It was wonderful to see so much support for … Lynchburg this GiveDay, especially all the matches and challenges benefiting The Lynchburg Fund.

“Deepest thanks to donors who partnered with us to help others’ gifts go even farther.”
