Historic Sandusky, a house museum owned and operated by the University of Lynchburg, hosted students and faculty on Saturday, Sept. 26, for We Want More History! The inaugural national initiative, coordinated by the Organization of American Historians, showcased the important role history plays in public life.
We Want More History! events took place at museums, historic sites, libraries, colleges and universities, and other sites across the U.S. from Sept. 25 to 27.
At Historic Sandusky, Lynchburg students toured the home, which was built in 1808 and played a major role in the Civil War Battle of Lynchburg, and did some hands-on archaeology. They also enjoyed pizza.
“Understanding who we are and how we got here is such a key part of becoming a good citizen,” said Dr. Nikki Sanders, professor of history, department chair of history and philosophy, and John Franklin East Distinguished Chair in the Humanities.
“Participating in We Want More History! is a way to showcase local history and make it come alive for students. Not only is history fun, but there are a lot of career paths that students don’t know about, leading from a history degree, and we would like to make those visible for interested students.”
