Internationally recognized peace activist to give Shumate Lecture

Internationally recognized peace activist Father John Dear will give the annual Jennie Cutler Shumate Lecture at University of Lynchburg’s Snidow Chapel at 7 p.m. on March 25. The title of his lecture is “The Ministries of Peace and Nonviolence.”

Internationally recognized peace activist Father John Dear will give a lecture at University of Lynchburg’s Snidow Chapel. As a priest, activist, and author he served as director of the Fellowship of Reconciliation, the largest interfaith peace organization in the U.S. The title of his lecture is “The Ministries of Peace and Nonviolence.”

Dear has worked with peace activists such as Mother Theresa and Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh. He has been nominated several times for the Nobel Peace Prize, including by Archbishop Desmond Tutu. He has authored 40 books on nonviolence and helped Pope Francis draft his “World Day of Peace” message. He also co-founded Campaign Nonviolence and the Nonviolent Cities Project.
