Hangout Areas
Moasic Lounge
Located in Schewel Hall, the Mosaic Lounge is a student-led space dedicated to inclusion, connection, and belonging. Open to all students, it’s designed as a welcoming environment for conversation, reflection, and community building. Comfortable seating, warm lighting, and creative touches like a digital fireplace make it an inviting place to relax or connect across cultures and experiences.
The WellNest
Located in Hundley Hall, The WellNest is part of the university’s holistic wellness initiative and offers spaces for reflection, movement, and community. Students can visit for yoga, meditation, prayer, or quiet study in a supportive, judgment-free environment. The area includes a game and community lounge, a dedicated Zen and meditation space, and flexible study areas designed to nurture balance and well-being.
The Hub @ Rainsford
Located on the first floor of Rainsford House, The Hub is a 24/7, card-access space for students to gather, study, or grab a quick bite. It features self-service kiosks offering fresh food options like bao buns, cheeseburgers, and pretzels, plus Costa Coffee and snacks. With comfortable seating and a pool table, it’s both a convenient dining stop and a relaxed social spot on campus.
Pete's Place
Located in the Drysdale Student Center, Pete’s Place is a central hangout spot featuring a gaming area, pool tables, and lounge seating. Situated near the commuter lockers and student club offices, it’s a lively space where students gather between classes, unwind with friends, or take a break from a busy day.
Living Room (Fireplace)
Located on the third floor of the Drysdale Student Center, just outside the dining hall, this cozy lounge offers a quiet place to unwind or study. With comfortable seating and a welcoming fireplace, it’s ideal for relaxing alone or meeting up with a small group between classes or meals.
Koukelka Balcony
Off the Living Room on the third floor of the Drysdale Student Center, the Koukelka Balcony overlooks Shellenberger Field and offers open-air seating with a scenic view of campus life. Open to all students, it’s a peaceful place to sip coffee, study outdoors, or enjoy the fresh air between classes.
Veterans Lounge
Located at the end of the third-floor hallway in the Drysdale Student Center, the Veterans Lounge provides a quiet, low-traffic space with a few comfortable chairs for veterans and military-connected students to pause, reflect, or take a break between classes.
Dell Thrift and Pantry
Located on the first floor of the Drysdale Student Center, Dell Thrift and Pantry is a student-run initiative promoting sustainability and community care. The space offers free and affordable clothing, household items, and pantry goods to support students, faculty, and staff.
DPT Break Room
Located in the Graduate Health Sciences Building off Monticello Avenue, this break room is reserved for Doctor of Physical Therapy students. Conveniently situated near labs and classrooms, it includes microwaves, refrigerators, and vending machines — a comfortable space to recharge or share a meal between classes.
MPAM Break Room
Also located in the Graduate Health Sciences Building off Monticello Avenue, this break room is reserved for Physician Assistant Medicine students. Positioned close to classrooms and labs, it features microwaves, refrigerators, and vending machines, offering a quiet and convenient place to take a break or study between sessions.
Hobbs Lounge
Located on the first and second floors of Hobbs-Sigler Hall, these open-access lounges provide comfortable seating and quiet space for study or collaboration. Positioned near STEM classrooms and labs, they’re convenient spots for students to review notes, meet with classmates, or take a short break between classes.
Mission House Coffee
Part of Dining Services and located in Schewel Hall, Mission House Coffee is a student favorite for both studying and meeting with friends. It offers a warm, inviting atmosphere with comfortable seating, coffee, and light snacks. It’s a popular stop for students looking to focus, refuel, or connect between classes.
2nd Floor Lounge - Schewel Hall
Located just outside classrooms on the second floor of Schewel Hall and near Mission House Coffee, this open lounge is a convenient stop between classes. With tables and comfortable seating, it serves as a relaxed space for both studying and conversation. Students often gather here to review notes, meet for group projects, or take a short break before their next lecture.
Westover Balconies
Accessible to Westover Hall residents, these upper-level balconies overlook Shellenberger Field and offer a front-row view of campus life. They’re a favorite spot during home games and a peaceful place to relax or study outdoors when the field is quiet.
Residence Hall Lounges
Residence Hall Lounges
All residence halls feature shared lounge areas where students can study, relax, and connect with their hallmates. Most include comfortable seating, TVs, study nooks, and kitchenettes, creating a welcoming environment for both quiet time and community life right where students live.
Study Areas
Knight-Capron Library
Open Monday–Friday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., Knight-Capron Library provides a range of study environments to fit every need. Students can choose from quiet individual carrels, group study rooms, and computer labs, with options to reserve spaces for collaboration or presentations. The library also offers printing, research support, and access to technology, making it the central hub for focused study on campus.
Schewel 2nd Floor Study Rooms
These modern study rooms in Schewel Hall are ideal for group projects or quiet, independent work. They feature tables, comfortable seating, and easy access to power outlets. The rooms are open to all students when not previously reserved and are conveniently located near classrooms and Mission House Coffee.
Westover Lounges
Available to Westover Hall residents, these seven lounges offer a mix of quiet study areas and collaborative spaces for group projects. Bright, modern, and comfortable, each lounge provides flexible seating and a relaxed atmosphere that supports both focus and community.
Computer Labs
Located across campus — including major sites in Knight-Capron Library, Schewel Hall, and Hobbs-Sigler — the computer labs are open to all students and provide reliable access to computers, printers, and software for coursework. Whether you’re conducting research, completing assignments, or printing documents, the labs offer practical, well-equipped study spaces.
Campus Green Spaces
The Dell
The heart of the University of Lynchburg campus, The Dell is a wide green space framed by walkways and shaded seating areas. It’s a favorite place to study, relax, or meet with friends, and it also serves as the setting for major campus traditions such as Commencement and the Candlelight Ceremony. The Dell captures the spirit of Lynchburg life — open, welcoming, and central to the student experience.
Schewel Plaza
Located just outside Schewel Hall and steps away from Mission House Coffee, Schewel Plaza features outdoor tables, planters, and shaded seating. It’s a versatile space used year-round for studying, meeting friends, or relaxing between classes. With steady foot traffic and a bright, open feel, it serves as both a social hub and a calm outdoor study spot.
Claytor Nature Center
Located in Bedford County about 20 minutes from campus, the 470-acre Claytor Nature Center offers miles of trails, forests, fields, and streams for exploration and study. The site includes an education building, observatory, and spaces for outdoor learning, research, and reflection. Students visit Claytor for classes, recreation, and a quiet connection to nature — a retreat that supports both academic discovery and personal well-being.
Front of Westover Hall
Overlooking Shellenberger Field, the lawn and patio in front of Westover Hall provide a comfortable spot for outdoor study or social breaks between classes. Students often gather here to enjoy the view or spend time around the fire pits, which are available to rent for student events and gatherings.
The Courts
Located on the south side of campus, The Courts is a cluster of office space, Outdoor Recreation’s Adventure Center, and outdoor gathering spaces that form one of Lynchburg’s student areas. With nearby green spaces and recreational spots, it’s a lively part of campus life where students study and spend time together.
Hammock Garden
Located on The Dell in front of Snidow Chapel, the Hammock Garden is a relaxed outdoor space perfect for resting, reading, or enjoying time with friends. Students can bring their own hammock or rent one through Outdoor Recreation. It’s a favorite warm-weather spot for unwinding and soaking in the campus atmosphere.
Faculty Drive Recreation Area
Just beyond Faculty Drive, this section of campus includes a disc golf course, practice fields, and a wooded trail system. It’s an ideal area for recreation, casual exercise, or outdoor study. Students use the space for intramural sports, walks, or simply spending time in nature between classes.
