For Desmond Harvey ’24, choosing the University of Lynchburg was initially a practical decision—he wanted to stay close to home. The Lynchburg native soon discovered the University offered much more than convenience; it provided a supportive community passionate about helping first-generation students succeed.

Desmond immersed himself fully in University life. He served as the president of Man2Man, a role he credits greatly enhancing his personal and social growth. Under his leadership, Man2Man collaborated with various campus organizations to plan and host events, fostering a vibrant campus community.

Beyond his campus roles, Desmond built an impressive professional portfolio. He completed an operations internship at First National Bank of Altavista, where he managed budgeting and risk assessment and helped streamline internal systems. Before this, he served as a bank teller, refining his skills in customer service and data management. Desmond also interned at Johnson Health Center, collaborating closely with the Business Intelligence Team to enhance vendor management and accounts payable systems.

On campus, his roles as a Champs Student Mentor and PASS Leader further highlight his dedication to helping peers succeed academically. Desmond believes strongly in the value of participation, noting, “Being involved has genuinely contributed to my overall development as a person and leader. It has taught me how to interact and socialize with others effectively.”

Desmond’s advice to fellow first-generation students emphasizes the importance of leveraging campus resources. “I wish all first-generation students knew that there will always be people here who care about helping you,” he says. “Whether it’s finding an advisor or getting your questions answered, there is always someone at Lynchburg ready to guide and support you.”
