Distinguished Alumni Award

The Distinguished Alumni Award honors alumni for exceptional contributions in professional, academic, or service fields, including dedication to Lynchburg. The 2024 recipients are JoAnn Lord Koff ’73, Michael Cerreto ’79, Sharon Williams Wills ’83, and Rhonda Fuller Turner ’94. Nominations for all alumni awards close on Oct. 1, 2024.

Candidates must hold a Lynchburg degree or have attended for at least two years before graduating from another accredited institution. Selection is based on outstanding achievements in society, including professional, academic, personal, or service contributions. Nominations are open to all sources. Awards may be given posthumously, with the number of recipients determined by the Alumni Association’s executive committee.

Honorary Alumni Award

The Honorary Alumni Award, established in 1986, recognizes non-alumni for exceptional interest, dedication, or service to Lynchburg. The 2024 recipients are Patricia Aronson, Elaine Drysdale, Daniel Lang, Elza Tiner, and Debra Wyland. Nominations for all alumni awards close on Oct. 1, 2024.

Eligible candidates may include staff, faculty, board members, school supporters, or friends of Lynchburg. Selection is based on demonstrated dedication and service, with preference given to those with at least five years of involvement. Faculty and staff nominees must exceed job expectations, as supported by references and recommendations. Special consideration is given to individuals who have broadened the school’s message or shared their expertise beyond their role. Nominations are open to all sources, and the award may be given posthumously.

John G. Eccles Student Leadership Award

The John G. Eccles Student Leadership Award, established in 2016 by the Lynchburg Alumni Association Board, honors John G. Eccles for his service to Lynchburg from 1986 to 2016. Presented annually to one undergraduate student, this award recognizes exceptional leadership through active participation in student activities, dedication to Lynchburg, and engagement with the alumni association. It celebrates a student leader who embodies John G. Eccles’s integrity, sense of humor, and passion for leadership.

The 2024 recipient is Kelsey Spickler ’24. Nominations for all alumni awards close on Oct. 1, 2024.

Eligible candidates must be full-time students enrolled at the University of Lynchburg for at least one year. Selection is based on demonstrated leadership in multiple areas of campus life, including student activities, residence life, athletics, or Greek life. Nominations are open to all sources.

M. Carey Brewer Alumni Award

The M. Carey Brewer Alumni Award, established in 1983, honors Dr. Carey Brewer ’49, the seventh president of Lynchburg College. This award recognizes young alumni who have made outstanding contributions to society in areas such as civic engagement, religious life, or service to their alma mater.

The 2024 recipient is Carter Elliott IV ’19. Nominations for all alumni awards close on Oct. 1, 2024.

Eligible candidates must have earned a Lynchburg undergraduate degree within the last 15 years and be under 40 years old. In special cases, nominees may have attended Lynchburg for at least two years before graduating from another accredited institution. Current alumni board members, alumni faculty, and staff are eligible. Selection is based on exceptional contributions to one or more areas of society, with a commitment to maintaining the award’s high honor. Nominations are open to all sources.

T. Gibson Hobbs Memorial Award

The T. Gibson Hobbs Memorial Award, Lynchburg’s highest alumni honor, recognizes exceptional service to church, community, and alma mater. Named for Thomas Gibson Hobbs ’04, a devoted trustee and board president, the award has been presented since 1948.

The 2024 recipient is Alexander Costa ’87. Nominations close on Oct. 1, 2024.

Eligible candidates must have graduated at least 10 years prior or attended Lynchburg for two years before earning a degree elsewhere. Current alumni board members, faculty, and staff are eligible. The award may be given posthumously in rare cases.

Recipients must demonstrate outstanding service in all three areas. Nominations are accepted only from alumni; non-alumni should contact the Office of Alumni Relations.

The Kenneth R. Garren Award

The Kenneth R. Garren Award, established in 2019, honors Dr. Kenneth R. Garren for his leadership as Lynchburg’s president from 2001-2020. Presented annually, it recognizes a graduate student who excels academically, mentors peers, participates in conferences, and promotes their program to prospective students.

The 2024 recipient is Lindsey Bateman ’23 MPAM, ’24 DMSc. Nominations close on Oct. 1, 2024.

Eligible candidates must be enrolled in a master’s or doctoral program at the University of Lynchburg and demonstrate exceptional engagement and leadership within the graduate student community. Nominations are open to all sources.

Lynchburg Sports Hall of Fame

The Lynchburg Sports Hall of Fame, established in 1978, is the highest athletic honor awarded by the Alumni Association. It recognizes outstanding athletes, teams, and contributors. Men’s teams joined NCAA Division III in 1975, followed by women’s teams in 1981.

The 2023 inductees are Katie Bruce Leuci ’11 (Softball), Drew Jamison ’07 (Men’s Soccer), Ronnie LaBrie ’10 (Baseball), Shelly Milks ’13, ’16 DPT (Field Hockey), Caitlin Sarkisian Engelberg ’96 (Women’s Lacrosse), Tyler Tolson ’09 (Men’s Lacrosse), and Coach Enza Steele. Honored teams include 2023 Baseball and 2022-23 Equestrian.

Nominations close July 15, 2024, and are open to Lynchburg alumni, staff, and friends. Nominees must have been full-time students for at least two years, letter-winners in a varsity sport, and graduated at least nine years prior. Non-alumni staff must have five years of service.

Induction categories include Individual (athletic performance and leadership), Team of Distinction (conference or national-level achievements), and Special Citation (significant contributions to Lynchburg athletics). Nominations are valid for three years, and awards may be given posthumously.
