Letter from Leadership

It is our honor to share the University of Lynchburg’s Annual Report for fiscal year 2024–25. This report reflects the support we received from donors during the last fiscal year and the University’s continued commitment to fiscal responsibility.

This has also been my first year serving as your Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer — a year marked by blessings and new beginnings. I wanted to take a moment to share some of the milestones we achieved together:

  • The Annual GiveDay Campaign doubled last year’s total, a powerful sign of supporter enthusiasm.
  • Our Comprehensive Campaign surpassed its five-year financial goal of $40 million.
  • On a cash basis, we turned an $8.5 million deficit as of June 2024 into a $3.5 million positive cash position by June 2025.
  • In May, in partnership with our trustees, the University passed its first balanced budget in more than seven years.
  • Student contributions to tuition increased by $3 million in 2025 over 2024.
  • Tactically, we closed our audit with a clean, unmodified opinion in just 90 days — the fastest completion in 20 years.

These achievements are not just numbers. We are reminded that not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted. Life has taught us that truth, and your support embodies it.  Advances in athletics, academics, and campus culture continue apace.

You, our supporters, have strengthened our mission of transforming lives and carrying forward the legacy of Dr. Josephus Hopwood and his wife, Sarah La-Rue. They believed education was a force for good to change the world. That conviction was undeniable as he endured the atrocities of the Civil War, and when he founded the college in 1903. How true it remains today.

We know challenges remain. We cannot, and dare not, deny them. Financial headwinds demand our continued diligence. Yet with your support, we are not only enduring — we are improving, innovating, and advancing.

From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you. Thank you for walking with us on this journey of blessings and new beginnings. Thank you for ensuring that we, Lynchburg’s premier university, remain strong, resilient, and true to our mission.

With gratitude,

Price Jett

The Christian Church

The Christian Church Statement

The University of Lynchburg is affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), a denomination with a tradition of engaging faith and reason in education. The University was founded in 1903 as Virginia Christian College by Dr. Josephus and Sarah Hopwood and a group of Disciples of Christ ministers and businessmen. The University receives annual funding from the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), the Disciples Mission Fund, endowments housed at the Christian Church Foundation, and the Thanksgiving Special Offering. In partnership with Higher Education and Leadership Ministries (HELM), the University of Lynchburg stays connected to the 14 other colleges and universities associated with the denomination. Lynchburg has always nurtured the concept of vocation, both for the countless pastors educated here and for the laypeople who understand faith and a commitment to justice as part of their life’s work.

The Virginia Foundation of Independent Colleges (VFIC)

The Virginia Foundation of Independent Colleges Statement

Founded in 1952, the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges (VFIC) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that supports 17 of Virginia’s independent institutions of higher education, including the University of Lynchburg. VFIC contributions that are undesignated from business and community leaders are distributed to member colleges and universities according to a standard formula: 40% based on undergraduate enrollment and 60% divided equally among the colleges and universities. In addition, Lynchburg receives designated funds that are vital in supporting academic programs, faculty development, library enhancements, facility improvements, multicultural activities, career services, student scholarships, and high-impact opportunities.

For the 2024-25 academic year, Lynchburg received $115,814 in funding from the VFIC. This amount included $53,418 in unrestricted funds, $32,897 in general scholarships, $8,000 for two designated student scholarships, and $21,499 to support library, research, programming, capital projects, ethics, and leadership development initiatives.
