Explore a summer of learning at the University of Lynchburg’s Summer Scholars Institute. This diverse range of summer camps caters to rising ninth to 12th graders and is tailored to offer you both a deep dive into fascinating subjects and a taste of campus life.

Health Sciences

Cap: 50 students (Two sections of 25 students)

Get the pulse on health science professions this summer!

If you’re a rising high school student and have considered studying health sciences, then you should come to the University of Lynchburg’s summer college prep program! This weeklong camp will allow you a chance to explore a variety of health-related careers, like being a physician assistant (PA), working in public health, or becoming an athletic trainer or physical therapist.

You’ll learn about what goes into nursing, exercise physiology, sport management, and biomedical sciences. Plus, you’ll make friends and get a feel for campus life at Lynchburg through exciting student activities!

You’ll try out:

  • Providing care to a trauma patient
  • Performing functional movement analyses
  • Advocating for healthy nutrition for all ages and making healthy snacks
  • Exploring anatomy and physiology through dissection, cadavers, and technology
  • Practicing first aid, CPR, and athletic training skills
  • Assessing vital signs and providing clinical care in the patient simulation lab
  • Analyzing how the brain and behavior interact through neuroanatomy
  • Ensuring health settings and practices are safe and legally compliant

Schedule

Sunday, 6/15

  • 2 – 4 p.m.: Residential camper check-in (Westover Hall)
  • 3:30 – 4 p.m.: Day camper check-in (Westover Hall)
  • 4 – 5 p.m.: Making the Most of College Session (for Parents and Campers)
  •  5:30 – 6:30 p.m.: Introduction Activities/Ice-breakers/Pizza dinner for residential and day campers 
  • 7 – 9 p.m.: First Night Activity
  • 9 p.m.: Day campers depart (Hopwood Hall)

Monday, 6/16 – Friday, 6/20 (See full details of Academic Session descriptions and presenters here.)

  • 8 – 9 a.m.: Breakfast (residential campers only)
  • 8:30 – 9 a.m.: Day Camper drop off (Drysdale Student Center – Charles P. Collins Lobby – Main Lobby)
  • 9 a.m. – Noon: Academic Session 1 (Mon., Physician Assistant Medicine; Tues., Counseling; Wed., Physical Therapy; Thurs., TBD; Fri., Lifecyle Nutrition & Implications for Public Health) 
  • Noon – 1 p.m.: Lunch and free time (Each day, a different health-related Major will be present in the Burton Dining Hall.)
  • 1 – 4 p.m.: Academic Session 2 (Mon., Nursing; Tues., Athletic Training; Wed., Physician Assistant Procedure Skills; Thurs., Functional Movement Analysis; Fri., TBD) 
  • 4 – 5:30 p.m.: Free time/Group Recreation
  • 5:30 – 6:00 p.m.: Day camper pick up (Hopwood Hall)
  • 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.: Dinner (resident campers covered; day camper optional)
  • 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.: Group Activity (varies nightly)

Saturday, 6/21 (Residential campers only)

  • 8 – 9 a.m.: Pack room and clean up
  • 9 – 10:00 a.m.: Breakfast 
  • 10 – 11 a.m.: Camper Pick-up and key return (Westover)/Optional Tour

Housing: Westover Hall

  • Westover Hall is a four-story residence with suite-style doubles, shared bathrooms, and a few medical singles. It has two wings (North and South), two elevators, and amenities like study nooks, a large community kitchen, lounges with balconies, and an outdoor rooftop terrace.
  • Each suite has two double rooms connected by a shared restroom, and students must provide their own bathroom essentials.
  • Each room includes a bed, wardrobe, dresser with a floating top, chair, ethernet port, and seven electrical outlets.
  • Room dimensions are 15’2″ x 18’6″, with varying window sizes and XL twin mattresses. The building also offers kitchenette areas on each floor and an outdoor terrace with a fire pit and grills.
