“Philip Geiger: Retrospective,” an exhibition spanning the long career of realist painter Philip Geiger, opens Thursday, Aug. 21, in the University of Lynchburg’s Daura Museum of Art.
Presented in partnership with Steven Francis Fine Art of Lynchburg, the show includes more than 70 of Geiger’s paintings. Admission is free and the public is welcome.

Geiger’s work has been praised for its “lustrous light, loose brushwork, and subtle color” and for how it captures “the subtle atmosphere of peaceful moments.”
Geiger has exhibited his work at galleries across the U.S., including the Tibor de Nagy Gallery in New York, and he has been reviewed by The New York Times, Art in America, ARTnews, and other media outlets.
Geiger studied at Washington University in St. Louis and Yale, and he taught art at the University of Virginia for more than 30 years.
An opening reception for the exhibition will be held from 2-5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 30.
At 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13, Scott Noel, a longtime friend of Geiger’s, will give a gallery talk about Geiger and his work. Noel, a Philadelphia-based artist and teacher, studied with Geiger at Washington University. Noel’s work has been exhibited in galleries across the country and is in the collection of numerous public, private, and corporate entities.
A second gallery talk — details are still in the works — will be held at noon on Saturday, Nov. 15.
The exhibition runs through Friday, Dec. 12.
The Daura Museum’s hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and noon-4 p.m. on Saturdays. The gallery is closed on Mondays and University holidays. For more information, email [email protected] or call 434.544.8595.
