“The rigorous academic environment challenged me intellectually and developed my critical thinking skills,” she said. “I built my confidence by navigating college life academics, social interactions, and independence.”

Their Undeniably Life-Changing Story

Major: Nursing

Emily Chen ’24 proves that nursing graduates are taking Lynchburg’s mission — “to inspire independent thinkers who become trustworthy, effective leaders that shape caring communities” — into the world.

“The most fulfilling thing about being a Navy nurse is not only am I taking care of military personnel and their family, but I am also serving my country,” she said. “Moreover, I have the opportunity to experience diverse and challenging environments, which helps me foster personal and professional growth every day.”

Emily ChenSo, how did Lynchburg’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing prepare Chen for her current role? “It prepared me … by fostering my curiosity and providing me with new precepts,” she said. “For example, the evidence-based practice research that I completed in my senior year has helped me realize how much research plays a role in my job as a nurse.

“As a nurse, my primary role is to provide compassionate and evidence-based care to patients. My daily duty as a nurse is to assess their needs, develop individualized care plans, and administer medications and treatments.”

Chen also credits the case studies and group assignments she completed as part of the University’s nursing program with improving her collaboration, communication, and teamwork skills.

“The rigorous academic environment challenged me intellectually and developed my critical thinking skills,” she said. “I built my confidence by navigating college life academics, social interactions, and independence.”
