Beard Center on Aging

Centers

Dedicated to enhancing the well-being of older adults and their caregivers.

Mission & Purpose

The Beard Center on Aging, situated at the University of Lynchburg, is deeply committed to its mission of enhancing the well-being of older adults and their caregivers. Its foundational purpose, established in 1982 by Dr. Belle Boone Beard, a noted centenarian researcher and gerontology professor, was to promote the understanding of the challenges and opportunities of aging and the contributions that older people can make to society. Dr. Beard herself was dedicated to “Promoting positive aging across generations.” The Beard Center fulfills its mission through several key areas:

Addressing Needs Through Engagement

The Center is dedicated to addressing the needs of older citizens through community education, engagement, and outreach. This includes connecting older adults, caregivers, family members, and others with information, resources, and services through initiatives like the Genworth Aging and Caregiver Resource Center.

Educational Initiatives

Offers workshops on aging — from aging in place and dementia to caregiver stress, positive aging, and elder-abuse prevention — for government, nonprofit, faith-based, and community groups. Through a partnership with the CVAAA and Genworth Foundation, the Resource Center loans free books, DVDs, and other materials on topics like Alzheimer’s and healthy aging, with University of Lynchburg students and volunteers providing information and referrals.

Promoting Positive Aging

A central theme is "promoting positive aging across generations". Executive Director Joseph L. Lugo, emphasizes that the Beard Center's goal is to "amplify this lived wisdom across multiple generations," viewing older adults as "the map readers and map makers of aging."

Student Involvement

The Center offers unique opportunities for Lynchburg students to learn through research initiatives, meaningful outreach, educational programs, and professional conferences, seminars, and workshops. Students can also join the team as interns, research assistants, or graduate assistants to work on initiatives such as the Faith & Aging Initiative, social media content creation, and caregiver training and support.

Community Partnerships

The Beard Center on Aging actively works with community partners, offering services like training, readiness assessments, grant applications, and student placement. It collaborates with organizations such as the Central Virginia Area Agency on Aging and is involved with the Virginia No Wrong Door and the Community Care Hub – Central Virginia Alliance for Community Living.

Founding History

The Beard Center on Aging and the Life Course was established in 1983 through a $200,000 gift from Belle Boone Beard, a 1923 alumna of the College and a former faculty member. The Center was initially established to promote education, research, and training in gerontology and to coordinate community resources. The goal was to develop programming addressing health, activities, and attitudes related to aging and the elderly, and to introduce new scientific knowledge about the aging process to Central Virginia.

Offering a certificate program in gerontology and an academic minor in that field, it also sponsored the Adult Health and Development Program, which was an intergenerational eight-week program held each semester that paired students and senior citizens, the Life Long Scholars Program, which invited retired people to enroll in College classes, and an annual symposium.
