What is the Fulbright U.S. Student Program?
The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is a prestigious, internationally competitive fellowship program that provides grants for teaching English, completing graduate coursework, or conducting research in countries worldwide. The program facilitates cultural exchange through direct, individual interaction, allowing the grantee to gain an appreciation for others’ viewpoints, beliefs, practices, and ways of thinking. Recipients of a Fulbright award are among an elite group of scholars with many opportunities upon returning to the United States.
Grant lengths and dates vary by award. Please consult specific award descriptions for details. Applicants must be citizens or nationals of the United States of America at the time of application.
Who can apply for the Fulbright U.S. Student Program?
- Undergraduate Students. Rising seniors and recent bachelor’s-degree recipients. Applicants must have a conferred bachelor’s degree or equivalent before the start of the grant.
- Master’s and doctoral candidates. Graduate-level candidates must demonstrate the capacity for independent study or research, together with a general knowledge of the history, culture, and current events of the countries to which they are applying.
- Young professionals, including writers, creative and performing artists, journalists, and those in law, business, and other professional fields.
