“The Monacan People” is a new permanent exhibition curated by Winona Gear ’23
Winona Gear ’23 has curated a new permanent exhibition, “The Monacan People,” for the Amherst County Museum and Historical Society. The people of the Monacan Nation were the first inhabitants of present-day Amherst County, migrating to central Virginia about 10,000 years ago. The exhibition explores the Monacan language, structures, social order, cultural and spiritual activities, contact with English settlers, mission schools, conflict over racial classification, and integration of the Monacan in modern history. The Amherst County Museum is open to the public Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
