Mu Sigma Theta was chartered at the University of Lynchburg in January 2017 to promote scholarship in the field of Museum Studies and to recognize academic achievement among its members. Membership carries with it a commitment to champion academic excellence, to foster professional engagement, and to encourage service and fellowship among students who excel in Museum Studies.
In all that we do, we strive to live up to our motto: “As the Muses Before Us.” The nine Muses of ancient Greek mythology were personifications of the arts, literature, music, history, and science. Throughout antiquity, they were called upon by artists and scholars alike to provide inspiration and to lend their aid in creative endeavors. In the development and upkeep of museums and the museum profession, the Muses played a paramount role. Indeed, the English word “museum” has its roots in ancient Greek and roughly translates to “the place where Muses Dwell.”

In their original conception, museums were thus dedicated to the Muses and the established place for scholarly pursuits and the arts. We at Mu Sigma Theta hold to this ideal and believe that the Muses serve as our guides in the pursuit of knowledge and excellence. As museum students, advocates, and professionals, it is our duty to ensure that museums continue to remain relevant in scholarship and public discourse. With this task before us, we implore inductees and members to stand firm to these ideals as they accept membership into Mu Sigma Theta.
