The University of Lynchburg has installed additional lighting and security cameras on the south side of campus. The project was funded in part by a $12,241.17 capital project grant from the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges.

With the funds, the University erected a 25-foot-tall, steel pole in a gravel parking lot between College and Lakewood streets. Electrical wiring and outdoor LED lights were then installed on the pole.

Although not grant-funded, two security cameras were also mounted atop the pole.

“We are deeply grateful to philanthropic partners like the VFIC for helping us continue to invest in infrastructure that improves our students’ on-campus experience,” said Erika Mork, Lynchburg’s director of institutional giving.

Micah Elder, a network administrator in Lynchburg’s information technology and resources department, approached Mork about a year ago, seeking funds for additional security lighting and cameras on campus.

He described the installed cameras as a “360 quad view” and a “PTZ — point, tilt, zoom.” The cameras, which provide five views total, provide better surveillance and working conditions for campus safety employees.

Mork agreed. “Making this a more well-lit area will create a safer environment for our students and the broader campus community,” she said.
