The Virginia Center for the Creative Arts will hold an event at the University of Lynchburg’s Daura Museum of Art on Wednesday, Nov. 19, from 7-8 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

The VCCA is a residential artist community located in Amherst, Virginia. They host over 400 fellows each year, providing them with the time and space needed to produce works of literature, visual art, and music.

VCCA Connects is a traveling event series that partners with local community spaces to connect art lovers with VCCA Fellows from around the world. Four fellows — Wo Chan, Roxanne Everett, Yeji Kim, and Ana Gamboa — will be present at the Daura.

Chan is a poet and drag artist who performs as “The Illustrious Pearl.” They are a winner of the Nightboat Poetry Prize and author of the book “Togetherness,” in which they recount stories from their childhood. Chan’s work has been featured in a number of literary publications, such as WUSSY, the Massachusetts Review, No Tokens, and The Margins.

Everett is a visual artist whose landscape paintings are inspired by wilderness areas worldwide. In addition to being selected as an artist in residence for private organizations and parks, she has worked for the U.S. National Park Service as a backcountry ranger.

Gamboa is a composer and cellist whose improvisational style of music draws inspiration from her travels in Latin America. On her website, Gamboa writes that she seeks to “create soundscapes that transcend specific genres” and “break with the Eurocentric perspectives that often dominate global musical appreciation.”

Kim is a musician and composer who plays the haegeum, a traditional Korean two-stringed fiddle. She uses the eight natural materials of the instrument — metal, stone, silk, bamboo, gourd, clay, leather, and wood — to explore different textures of sound.

The event will feature artist presentations, a Q&A session, and light refreshments.
