Biography:

A former English professor and gender studies director, Dr. Beth Savage holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Agnes Scott and a PhD from the University of Illinois, focused on gender theory and 18th-century drama. She earned the 2014 Chawton House Fellowship, which was presented in 2015 and published in Restoration and Eighteenth-Century Theatre Research. Her scholarship covers 18th-century celebrity, mothers in drama, and masculinity/cross-dressing in erotica.

Savage’s teaching tackles provocative topics, including the 2016 colloquium “Icons of Excess.” Students explored rare books, visited the Folger for a lecture, exhibit, and a performance of Sense and Sensibility, and later joined a 2018 Austen study-abroad program.
