During Commencement, nearby accommodations may be difficult to find. Make sure to book well in advance. Discover Lynchburg provides a comprehensive list of hotel and lodging options. You’ll also find a calendar of local events and information about historical places of interest and dining and shopping options.
Guest parking will be available in and around campus on a first-come-first-served basis. A drop-off area for accessible seating will be available until 8:45 a.m. Campus Safety and Security will be directing traffic on the morning of Commencement and guiding guests to available parking.
Accessible parking lots are located near Carnegie Hall, Hopwood Hall, and the Psychology Building, and drop off is also available at Dillard Circle. The main entrance of the University will serve as the point of entry for accessible parking and drop offs. There will be signage and security personnel available for guidance.
Once parking capacity has been reached on campus, the main entrance to the University will remain open only for accessible drop off and VIP. All other traffic will be routed to the intersection of Lakeside Drive and College Drive. Security personnel and signage will provide direction to the Hornet lot (the old Thomas Road Baptist Church lot – 701 Thomas Road).
The University makes every effort to hold Commencement outside on the Dell – rain or shine. Only severe weather (thunder, lightning, or other dangerous conditions) will bring the exercises indoors to Turner Gymnasium. Should the University implement the inclement weather plan, tickets (2 per graduate) will be required for the indoor ceremony. Additional viewing locations are listed below. Each location will provide a live video feed of the ceremony.
If the weather on Commencement morning is questionable, the decision to remain outside on the Dell or move inside to Turner Gymnasium will be made by President Garren by 5:30 a.m. At that time, we will announce whether the activities will remain outside and on-time or move forward with Plan A or Plan B, detailed below.
- Rain delay. Commencement will remain outside on the Dell and begin two hours later, at 11 a.m.
- Move inside. Commencement will move inside to Turner Gymnasium and begin three hours later, at 12 p.m.
- Guest tickets required.
- If the ceremony moves indoors, there will be no processional of degree candidates; instead candidates must be seated by 10:30 a.m.
- Doors will open to guests at 11 a.m.
- Faculty will process as usual.
Weather announcements/changes will be posted to the University website and social media channels.
Adequate seating on the Dell is provided for families and friends on a first-come-first served basis. Feel free to bring a bag chair or blanket in case you need it and/or want to move around on the Dell. In the event of inclement weather, Commencement may be moved indoors to Turner Gymnasium (see Inclement Weather), where indoor seating will be limited and will require tickets for admission (see Ticket information below).
Should you need accessible seating for guests with disabilities or mobility limitations, please request those in advance in a reserved seating area (see Accessibility/Disability Information).
Tickets are not required for Commencement on the Dell where seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. However, should weather force the commencement exercises indoors to Turner Gymnasium, each candidate for graduation will be provided with two tickets for indoor seating, previously distributed at the Capn’ It Off event.
For those graduation candidates who did not obtain their tickets there, your tickets will be available for pick up at the the Registrar’s Office (4th floor, Hall Campus Center) anytime M-F 8:30 a.m to 5:00 p.m. DPT and PA candidates receive their tickets from those program offices.
