Black women are three times more likely to die from maternal complications in the U.S. than non-Black women, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the rate of those deaths has only gotten worse over the past few years. It’s an issue that nursing major Alexandra Boatwright ’22 sought to tackle for her Westover Honors senior project. With plans to work as a labor and delivery nurse after graduating, she said her passion for maternal medicine and reproductive health rights fused with her investment in problems plaguing Black communities.

Student research targets nursing compassion fatigue
You’ve seen it in headlines everywhere: health workers are being stretched thin and suffering from burnout, and complications from the coronavirus pandemic have made it exponentially worse for them. Annabelle Nagy observed that trend and, as president of the nursing Class of 2022, decided last spring she wanted to drill down into what was causing it for her Westover Honors senior project. A key part of that phenomenon that she decided to focus on was compassion fatigue, especially among pediatric care nurses.
Lynchburg lauded for best value, nursing program, and social mobility in U.S. News’ 2022 Best Colleges rankings
The University of Lynchburg is once again noted among U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges. Lynchburg’s 2022 rankings include a 21st spot among regional universities in the South — up one from last year — and a 23rd place for Best Value in that category. Among Best Colleges for Veterans, Lynchburg ranked No. 35 and on the Top Performers on Social Mobility list, the University ranked 62nd. Lynchburg also was included on a new list that ranks the best Undergraduate Nursing Programs in the country.
Beard Center on Aging offers hope, education to seniors and students during COVID-19

Virtual dissection table highlight of Hobbs-Sigler renovations
Imagine dissecting a cadaver without having to pick up a scalpel. This fall, University of Lynchburg students will be able to do that with a new, state-of-the-art tool: the Anatomage Table. Billed as “the world’s first virtual dissection table,” the Anatomage Table looks like a giant tablet computer, albeit one that’s loaded with a variety of cadavers and other anatomical and medical images.
