Aly Bonilla ’22 was one of five students from across the U.S. chosen by the Bonner Foundation to participate in its 2020 National Summer Internship Program. Bonilla, an English major from Norwalk, Connecticut, also is only the second University of Lynchburg Bonner Leader ever to be selected for the internship.

Bonner Leader researches ‘servants’ section’ at cemetery
Alexa Watkin ’23 carefully opens one of the burial books in the office of Presbyterian Cemetery, a historic graveyard that’s located about three miles from the University of Lynchburg. She thumbs through the pages that list the names of Lynchburg-area residents who have been buried at the cemetery since it opened in 1823.
MPH student lending hands, heart to help local nonprofit
At home in India, Paramnistha Kanadiya ’20 MPH saw a lot of poverty, particularly among the country’s children. Wanting to do something about it led her to the University Lynchburg’s Master of Public Health program. Here, she’s gaining the knowledge and skills she’ll need to help many of these children someday through her own charitable organization.

Bonner program expands
Lynchburg College will expand its service-focused Bonner Leader Program to a four-year program in the fall of 2018. The expansion will increase the total amount of time Bonner students spend in service activities, impacting the students as well as the community.
Math major named Sommerville Scholar
Emily Horton ’18 said she “cried a little” when she found out that she’d been selected the 2017 Sommerville Scholar. The annual award, given since 1965 in memory of former professor Richard Clarke Sommerville, is the most prestigious academic accolade presented at Lynchburg.
