Time spent down on the farm lifts Sommerville Scholar’s spirits
On Sunday mornings, you can find Hiatt O’Connor ’20 feeding the horses at Brook Hill Farm, a local nonprofit equestrian center that focuses on therapeutic riding and horse rescue. O’Connor, a Westover Honors fellow and the 2019 Sommerville Scholar, started volunteering at the Bedford County, Virginia, farm when he was in the Bonner Leader Program at the University of Lynchburg.
Lynchburg sophomore selected as Bonner Foundation intern
Aly Bonilla ’22 was one of five students from across the U.S. chosen by the Bonner Foundation to participate in its 2020 National Summer Internship Program. Bonilla, an English major from Norwalk, Connecticut, also is only the second University of Lynchburg Bonner Leader ever to be selected for the internship.
Bonner Leader researches ‘servants’ section’ at cemetery
Alexa Watkin ’23 carefully opens one of the burial books in the office of Presbyterian Cemetery, a historic graveyard that’s located about three miles from the University of Lynchburg. She thumbs through the pages that list the names of Lynchburg-area residents who have been buried at the cemetery since it opened in 1823.
MPH student lending hands, heart to help local nonprofit
At home in India, Paramnistha Kanadiya ’20 MPH saw a lot of poverty, particularly among the country’s children. Wanting to do something about it led her to the University Lynchburg’s Master of Public Health program. Here, she’s gaining the knowledge and skills she’ll need to help many of these children someday through her own charitable organization.
Bonners get out of ‘bubble,’ spend summer in service
Two students from the University of Lynchburg’s Bonner Leader Program spent the summer serving others through the Shepherd Higher Education Consortium on Poverty, an organization that combines education and community service. As Aly Bonilla ’22 put it, it got them out of their “bubble.”
