Africana Studies Degree (BA)
The Africana studies major at Lynchburg is a multidisciplinary area of study that focuses on teaching students how historical and contemporary experiences of African descendants in the Americas have helped to shape their identity.
The major introduces students to the complexities, struggles, and successes of people of African descent around the world. Students will examine the role of race, the mechanics of global slavery, and the importance of both in the making and shaping of the modern world. The curriculum also considers literary, cultural, and aesthetic theories and practices in the African diaspora.
With this degree, you’ll be able to explore your interests in any number of disciplines or create a new discipline all on your own! Our students can look forward to careers in a variety of fields including education, policy-making, community development, or social justice advocacy.
As an Africana studies major at the University of Lynchburg, you’ll:
- Work in the local community as part of the Center for Community Development and Social Justice for your capstone project.
- Complete an internship, and/or study abroad in Uganda or South Africa.
- Look at the world from all angles. Africana Studies combines courses in history and political science, literature, music, and psychology.
