Lynchburg’s sociology minor can complement many other fields of study with a solid grounding in the principles and methodologies of sociology — a science dedicated to understanding social phenomena, social behavior, and societal change. This program will help you learn how to analyze and interpret complex social dynamics, recognize facets of human identity, and understand social diversity, inequality, and their impacts on society.
This program’s foundational courses will introduce you to the basic principles of sociology and will provide you with a new lens to see human societies through. You’ll learn about the technical details and standards of social research and take an in-depth look at the work of major classical theorists.
Plus, you’ll pick from more specific courses on sociological concepts and issues that might be important or interesting to you, like Gender and Society, Sociology of Race and Ethnicity, Marriage and the Family, or courses on religion, culture, and social justice.
Throughout this curriculum, students will learn to critically analyze social issues, develop empathetic understanding, and foster a broader perspective on human behavior. This minor pairs well with many majors, especially those in the humanities and social sciences, equipping students with the skills to understand and address complex social problems in a globalized world.
