First Generation Students

First generation students are those whose parents have not attained a college degree.

"First Gens" make up about a third of the LC student population. They come from many different communities and have many different interests.

Opportunities for First Gen Students at LC

Summer Transition Program

The Summer Transition Program (STP) helps first-generation and other students of diverse backgrounds to make a successful transition from their high school environment to Lynchburg College.

STP takes place right before the fall semester begins.

Once you pay your deposit you will receive a full application packet about STP. If you have any questions, contact the International and Multicultural Services office at or 434.544.8330.

If you participate in STP, you'll be paired with an upper-class mentor at the beginning of the fall semester. Your mentor will help you throughout your first semester at college.

Transition Coaching

If you have any difficulty transitioning to college, please contact Lance Firebaugh at He'll help you get it sorted out!

Workshop Series

Workshops are offered especially for first generation students. Look for announcements throughout the fall semester for these workshops.

Expand Your Horizons (EYH)

Expand Your Horizons is a learning community for first generation students. You'll create a plan for your education, learn college success or career development skills, and participate in an outdoor adventure leadership course at Claytor Nature Study Center.
