Where to Start the Process?
If you are planning to request financial aid to pay for all or part of your study abroad trip, please read the following information.
To apply first go to the Center for Global Education pages and select the Study Abroad program you wish to participate and register to create a login.
After creating a login you can now apply for Scholarships and the Experiential Learning Grant (ELG) to study abroad.
If you will need additional funding beyond scholarships and grants please review your options: Federal Direct Parent PLUS Loans, Alternative Loans and Federal Direct Stafford Loans.
- For a parent(s) who wants to apply for a Federal Direct Parent PLUS Loan please apply at studentaid.gov for the term they are planning to studying abroad.
- For students who want to apply for an Alternative loan or search and compare different Alternative loan lenders and options please use FASTChoice or apply directly on the lenders website.
- If you are studying abroad in the summer and would like to be considered for a Federal Direct Stafford loan please complete the 2022-23 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Upon receipt of your study abroad award notification, please complete any necessary documentation (Master Promissory Note (MPN), Entrance Counseling and your Summer Award Acceptance Form).
You may use one semester of Federal Direct Stafford Loan eligibility and combine this with other scholarships, grants and loans to meet your costs associated with the study abroad program.
If a student is taking less than 6 hours during any term of enrollment or not in a degree or certificate program, he or she will not be eligible for federal direct loans. If you have unused loan eligibility for either the fall or spring semester, you may want to talk with our Financial Aid Office to see if you can borrow additional funds to offset the added cost of Winter term.
Please be aware of the deposit requirements for the study abroad programs and when payments are due. Loan proceeds may be used to cover these deposits; however the loan disbursements are typically not available prior to deposit deadlines.
If you need additional assistance please schedule an appointment with the Office of Financial Aid to discuss your individual financial aid options. Please contact our office at 434.544.8228.
