Substance use on college campuses continues to be a widespread problem. Nearly half of all college students might face a substance use disorder (SUD) at some point during their college experience. Furthermore, about 40% engage in binge drinking, and students who use substances are more likely to experience academic difficulties and significant psychiatric and medical dysfunction. For students who have navigated their way to recovery, college campuses can be challenging places to find true recovery-friendly connections and community. A failure to offer culturally responsive opportunities for belonging can further threaten these students’ current and future wellness.
In recognition of National Recovery Month, we wish to highlight our own Hornets in Recovery program. Through a thoughtful panel discussion, our speakers will share their stories of recovery, offer insights on how to boldly face the stigma of SUDs and recovery, and demonstrate that there is hope for healing.
We invite all students — whether you are in recovery, considering it, or know someone battling these challenges — to join us and understand how collegiate programs can offer invaluable help in these crucial times.
