What is it like to make art during a pandemic, and while miles away from your classmates, your art instructor, and most everyone else to boot?
Artwork by area high school students is on display in the Lobby Gallery at the University of Lynchburg’s Dillard Fine Arts Center. This is the second year Lynchburg has hosted an exhibition of high school artwork. It began when art professors proposed the idea and invited area high school art teachers to nominate some of their students’ best work to be displayed on campus.

Dr. Barbara Rothermel, director of Lynchburg’s Daura Gallery, recently returned from China, where she spent two weeks at Shanghai Jiao Tong University presenting professional development workshops on behalf of University Museums and Collections (UMAC), a committee of the International Council of Museums (ICOM).
When Dr. Jim Owens, a longtime history professor at Lynchburg College, died in August of 2017, he bequeathed to the College a large and eclectic collection of artwork. Of the approximately 300 pieces, many fall into the category of southern outsider folk art.
The life-size portrait bust of Thomas Jefferson captures the third president’s selflessness and devotion to public service. “It was my intent to show him as a visionary, to make him seem very purposeful, to show his strength of character and his strength of purpose in giving himself totally to the nation and to the state of Virginia.”
