Artwork from the permanent collection of the University of Lynchburg’s Daura Museum of Art will take center stage this spring in three exhibits, two of which open next week.
“Works from the Collection: An Accumulation of Objects Gathered for Study, Comparison, or Exhibition,” opens on Monday, Jan. 22. The exhibit includes artwork by museum namesake Pierre Daura, along with works by Queena Stovall, Brooke Abbot, Jean Hélion, Cy Twombly, Connie Fox, Miriam Schapiro, Howard Finster, and Mose Tolliver.
The exhibit also includes Native American pottery from the Zuni Pueblo of New Mexico, African masks, Australian aboriginal paintings, and more.
“Works from the Collection” closes on Saturday, May 18.
“Local Artists: The Lynchburg School” will be exhibited in the Lobby Gallery of Dillard Fine Arts Center — located just downstairs from the Daura Museum — starting on Jan. 22 and running through at least Friday, Feb. 23.
The exhibit has been described as a “timeline of the development of the art culture in Lynchburg.” It showcases artists who were “influential teachers and promoters of the arts,” including Georgia Morgan, who co-founded the Lynchburg Art Club and chaired the art department at Lynchburg College for 30 years.
Other artists include Solly Blank, Ron Boehmer, Karen Bowden, Howard Coleman, David Eakin, William Donald Evans, Letty Frazier, Robert Fuller, Patricia Herrington, Gertrude Hindenlang, Frank Hobbs, Anne Adams Roberts Massie, Helen Gray Mahood McGehee, Rafael Alphonso Umaña Mendez, Epps Turner Perrow, Robert Shepperd, Thelma Twery, and Rosalie Day White.
An exhibit of contemporary photography will open on Thursday, Feb. 1, in the Daura Museum. It includes work by Kristin Capp, Ralph Gibson, Walter Iooss Jr., and Joyce Tenneson — artists described by Daura Director Brooke Marcy as “top contemporary photographers.”
The Daura Museum will host a reception from 4 to 6 p.m. on Feb. 1. Admission is free, refreshments will be served, and the public is invited to attend. The exhibit closes on Friday, March 8.
“I’ve had the privilege over the past few months of getting to know the Daura Museum’s extensive permanent collection,” said Marcy, who was named the Daura’s director in August 2023. “To say it has been an exciting adventure would be an understatement.
“These three exhibitions are a small glimpse into a collection of over 4,000-plus paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, and photographs spanning the 20th century, and contemporary art, folk art, and art and artifacts from Africa, Asia, and Australia.
“This collection is an incredible resource to enhance academic experience, inspire, and educate the entire University of Lynchburg community, as well as the greater Lynchburg community.”
The Daura Museum of Art is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, and noon to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. It’s closed for holidays and University breaks. Admission is free. For more information, call 434.544.8595 or email dauramuseum@lynchburg.edu.
