You’ve probably noticed that creativity has increased in acceptance and value: In other words, creativity has become a buzzword. Think about it: How many times have you said (or heard) “I’m just not creative”? As a music educator, I wholeheartedly believe everyone is creative at something. It’s just a matter of finding it.

While we can’t all be like Mozart, da Vinci, or Einstein, we all enjoy creative activities. These are often cultivated through our hobbies: painting, dancing, writing, playing instruments, and singing in the choir or the shower. Our finished pieces may not be comparable with the likes of the great masters, but often the process is therapeutic and the end result can be aesthetically pleasing.

Let’s explore the creativity that exists in every one of us. What is creativity? Why is creativity so important in today’s society? What barriers stand in our way? Through audience participation, we will experience creativity in action through the presentation of new instruments, improvisation performances, composition of new music, development of poetry/creative writing, and what this may look like through the artist’s perspective.

The University of Lynchburg’s LIFE@Lynchburg program offers not-for-credit learning opportunities for community members age 50 and older. The program features weekly presentations on a variety of engaging topics, taught by current and retired faculty and staff members or area educators and presenters.
