Thornton Reading series continues with Terrance Hayes

‘Pandemic Poetry Project’ spreads joy of poetry across campus
Like spring flowers, poetry will soon start popping up all over campus. In conjunction with National Poetry Month, the University of Lynchburg’s School of Humanities and English department will sponsor the “Pandemic Poetry Project,” a two-week-long, public humanities initiative, April 12-25.
English professor launches ‘Writers Recycle’
Dr. Meghan McGuire, an assistant professor of English at the University of Lynchburg, has launched “Writers Recycle,” an on-campus initiative to recycle used writing instruments. Through the program, used mechanical and wooden pencils, and pens, markers, highlighters, and their caps will be collected and recycled.
MBA grad named to New College Institute board
Treney Tweedy ’97, ’20 MBA was recently appointed by Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam to the board of directors of the New College Institute. The state-funded group, located in Martinsville, Virginia, offers degrees — bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate — through partnerships with colleges and universities across the commonwealth.
Lynchburg English professor receives HELM faculty excellence award
University of Lynchburg English professor Dr. Nina Vest Salmon is the 2019-20 recipient of the T. A. Abbott Award for Faculty Excellence. The honor is given out annually by Higher Education and Leadership Ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
Lynchburg sophomore selected as Bonner Foundation intern
Aly Bonilla ’22 was one of five students from across the U.S. chosen by the Bonner Foundation to participate in its 2020 National Summer Internship Program. Bonilla, an English major from Norwalk, Connecticut, also is only the second University of Lynchburg Bonner Leader ever to be selected for the internship.
