The Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium Standards (ISLLC) were revised and adopted by the National Policy Board for Educational Administration (NPBEA) on December 12, 2007. These standards are the foundation for the School Leader’s Licensure Assessment (SLLA).
In 2004, the General Assembly amended the Code of Virginia to require that initial licensure for principals and other school leaders, as determined by the State Board of Education, be contingent upon passage of the SLLA. These 6 standards manifest the overarching goals of the program. They are noted below.
Standard 1
- An education leader promotes the success of every student by facilitating the development, articulation, implementation, and stewardship of a vision of learning that is shared and supported by all stakeholders.
Standard 2
- An education leader promotes the success of every student by advocating, nurturing, and sustaining a school culture and instructional program conducive to student learning and staff professional growth.
Standard 3
- An education leader promotes the success of every student by ensuring management of the organization, operation, and resources for a safe, efficient, and effective learning environment.
Standard 4
- An education leader promotes the success of every student by collaborating with faculty and community members, responding to diverse community interests and needs, and mobilizing community resources.
Standard 5
- An education leader promotes the success of every student by acting with integrity, fairness, and in an ethical manner.
Standard 6
- An education leader promotes the success of every student by understanding, responding to, and influencing the larger political, social, economic, legal, and cultural context.
