Grad Program: Master of Education in School Counseling
Major: Interdisciplinary Studies — Elementary Education emphasis
For Kiana Darby ’17, ’23 MEd, the University of Lynchburg “really opened up a lot of doors.” During her time here, Darby was keen on exploring all the avenues that would enable her to help children with their math skills. She participated in various activities, including tutoring at an after-school program at Daniel Hills Recreation Center and a work-study job at Heritage Elementary School.
“I want to be able to change a child’s life,” she said. “I wanted to do something to help them excel.”
Darby’s hard work and dedication have paid off, as she is now a fourth-grade teacher at Bedford Hills Elementary School. Furthermore, she pursued a Master of Education in School Counseling and chose Lynchburg again for her postgraduate studies.
She believes math should not be intimidating, so she is always trying to discover effective teaching styles as well as students’ learning styles. This has made the experience as educational for her as it has been for the children. “They’re not the only ones learning,” she said.
Darby expressed gratitude for the people who not only helped her to graduate but also made it easier for her to see the potential she has to create change. Thanks to the experiences she’s had outside the classroom, she is equipped with the skills needed to teach in the real world.
