“I just want to tell whoever is reading this that if you’re ever wondering, ‘Should I join this?’ or ‘Should I try that?’ remember that college is the place for you to grow, to have fun, and to have the resources to help you get back on your feet when you can’t do it on your own. Instead of ‘Should I?’ ask ‘Why not?’”
Brazilian student Fernanda Angel Evangelista ’27 is a testament to making the most of educational opportunities abroad. As a Westover Honors Fellow, she juggles an array of responsibilities, including roles as the SGA’s vice president of internal affairs, a student ambassador for the Office of Admissions, and participating in numerous clubs and societies.
Evangelista’s drive stems from a desire to seize opportunities she felt were unavailable in Brazil, particularly in the realms of law and politics.
“My dream was always to come study in America because I know I’m meant to do something big in the future and I know I would not have that opportunity in Brazil, especially working with law and politics,” Evangelista said.
“I never got to choose my classes growing up. We had no extracurricular activities and we had no GPA. So even though I liked school, I could not do anything much with it like people could here.
“I think this is the main reason why I got myself involved with so many activities on campus because I know I was given an opportunity that most Brazilians could only dream of, so I’m making sure that I’m making the best out of it.”
Lynchburg appealed to her because of its Debate and Forensics Society, leading to a mentoring relationship with Dr. Paula Youra, who praises Evangelista’s enthusiasm and contribution to the team.
Her future aspirations include attending law school and working within the U.S. government, ambitions supported by her professors and mentors at Lynchburg who recognize her dedication and potential.
As she progresses through her education, Evangelista remains committed to maximizing her university experience, encouraging others to embrace opportunities for growth and involvement. Her journey reflects a deep appreciation for the educational opportunities in the U.S. and a determined pursuit of her goals, making her a model of ambition and resilience for her peers.
