On Friday, March 24, the University of Lynchburg will present “On the West Side with Bernstein, Mozart, and ‘Rudy.’”
The concert, which begins at 7:30 p.m. in Sydnor Performance Hall, will feature Lynchburg’s Wind Symphony and Orchestra, directed by Dr. Oeida Hatcher; the String Orchestra, directed by Joe Nigro; and the Community Big Band, directed by Dr. Chris Magee.
In the spirit of Lynchburg’s popular “Night the Movies” series, but without a common theme, the one-hour concert will include music from “West Side Story,” “Amadeus,” “Rudy,” and the forthcoming “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.”
As usual, movie clips will accompany the musical selections.
Tickets are free, but required, and can be reserved by emailing the music department at music@lynchburg.edu. Unlike “Night at the Movies,” this concert will be held for only one night, so tickets are expected to “sell out” quickly.
A highlight of the concert will be the “Symphonic Dances” from “West Side Story.” Assembled by composer Leonard Bernstein in 1961, the 23-minute-long piece includes iconic selections from the “West Side Story” soundtrack — “Somewhere,” “Mambo,” “Cool,” “Rumble,” and others.
A reception, including popcorn, root beer, and Coke floats, will follow the performance.
