Dr. Jill M. Hermann-Wilmarth will present a Gender Studies lecture about LGBTQ-inclusive literature in elementary classrooms at the University of Lynchburg at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, in Memorial Ballroom, Hall Campus Center.
The lecture, titled “Queering Elementary Classrooms Through English Language Arts Curriculum,” draws on Dr. Hermann-Wilmarth’s research about LGBTQ children’s literature and her experience using that literature in an elementary school classroom.
Dr. Hermann-Wilmarth is a professor of teaching, learning, and educational studies at Western Michigan University. Her book, Reading the Rainbow: LGBTQ-Inclusive Literacy Instruction in the Elementary Classroom, co-authored with Caitlyn L. Ryan, was recently awarded the Edward B. Fry book award for outstanding contributions to literacy research and practice by the Literacy Research Association.
The lecture is sponsored by the University of Lynchburg Gender Studies Program and the Office of Equity and Inclusion.
