The bestselling author Celeste Ng will read from her award-winning novels at the University of Lynchburg at 7:30 p.m. March 20 in the Sydnor Performance Hall, Schewel Hall. The event is free and open to the public, and a book signing will follow.
Ng’s novels have attracted a huge number of fans in a relatively short time. Her first book, Everything I Never Told You, was a New York Times bestseller and Amazon’s #1 Best Book of 2014. Her next novel, Little Fires Everywhere, won the Massachusetts Book Award and the Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature.
Her work is popular at the University of Lynchburg, too. Dr. Robin Bates included Ng’s Little Fires Everywhere in one of her English classes. The students enjoyed the multiple, intertwined storylines and felt the book was accessible and current, even though it was set in the 1990s.
“My students connected with it immediately,” Dr. Bates said. “In no time at all, they were gripped by the book. Across the class, everybody liked it.”
In addition to the public reading, University of Lynchburg students can attend a question and answer session with Ng at 3 p.m. on March 20 in Schewel Hall.
Ng was born in 1980 in Pittsburgh to her parents, who had immigrated from Hong Kong. She went on to get her bachelor’s degree in English at Harvard University and her Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. She lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with her husband and son.
