University of Lynchburg has been recognized for its use of high-impact educational practices as one of the nation’s Colleges of Distinction for 2019. It is one of only 10 schools in Virginia recognized on the list.
Lynchburg’s recognition comes after a review of its programs showed alignment with four distinctive traits identified by the organization Colleges of Distinction: engaged students, great teaching, vibrant community, and successful outcomes. With a unique learning environment, its programming engages students with experiences that build character, develop critical-thinking skills, and prepare students to make a mark in the world.
“The University of Lynchburg champions the key factors that Colleges of Distinction embraces,” said Sally Selden, vice president and dean for academic affairs. “Student engagement is our top priority, and great teaching is a hallmark of our faculty. Our students enjoy a vibrant community, and our alumni exemplify excellent outcomes in many fields. We’re honored to be recognized by Colleges of Distinction again.”
Lynchburg’s commitment to the four distinctions is born out by data. For example, Lynchburg students are more than twice as likely to study abroad than their peers at similar schools, and almost 70 percent more likely to participate in undergraduate research. Nearly three-fourths of all Lynchburg students complete internships or other field experiences.
The University’s academic program already includes many high-impact practices, including service-learning, intensive writing courses, interdisciplinary programs, collaborative projects, and many more. The institution’s strategic plan aims for each student to experience at least three high-impact practices before graduation.

“We are thrilled to recognize University of Lynchburg as a College of Distinction for its effective dedication to student success,” said Tyson Schritter, chief operating officer for Colleges of Distinction. “Lynchburg’s curriculum is enriched with the kind of high-impact educational practices that are most crucial for student development. Such innovative engagement is preparing the next generation of young adults to thrive after college.”
The Colleges of Distinction selection process consists of a review of each institution’s freshman experience and retention efforts alongside its general education programs, alumni success, strategic plan, student satisfaction, and more.
“Colleges of Distinction is far more than a ranking list of colleges and universities,” Schritter said. “We seek out the schools that are wholly focused on the student experience, constantly working to produce graduates who are prepared for a rapidly changing global society. University of Lynchburg stands out in the way it strives to help its students to learn, grow, and succeed.”
