The School of Business and Economics at University of Lynchburg ranks second in the nation for leadership development, according to the 2017 LEAD Awards sponsored by HR.com.
Informed by student feedback, the new rankings name Lynchburg near the top for degree programs emphasizing leadership and organizational development. SOBE bested larger schools such as University of Denver, Vanderbilt University, and New York University for the ranking.
University of Lynchburg has risen in the LEAD rankings for several years. In 2016, SOBE ranked fourth, up from 29th in 2011.
“Everything we do in the School of Business and Economics at University of Lynchburg centers on preparing students to be responsible leaders in a rapidly changing global economy,” said Dr. Joseph Turek, dean of SOBE. “We’re honored that our students’ input places us among the top schools in the nation.”
SOBE’s business and economics programs are strongly rooted in the College’s liberal arts tradition. The ability to see the world from different disciplinary perspectives, an openness to new ideas, and the commitment to act with integrity are essential characteristics of successful 21st Century leadership. “A firm understanding of the liberal arts,” Dr. Turek added, “provides our students with a broader foundation for the decisions they will make as leaders in business.”
SOBE engages in leadership development activities throughout its curriculum, at both the undergraduate and graduate level. The Gifford Lecture in Business Leadership and Ethics has brought world-renowned speakers to campus and the annual Anderson Leadership Conference, a partnership with the Office of Student Activities, provides leadership development training to Lynchburg area students. SOBE’s Leadership Development Institute recently launched the Transformative Leaders Lab, a series of workshops designed to help leaders cultivate a digital mindset and acquire the skills, attitudes, and values needed to manage disruption in an increasingly turbulent economy. A group of local business and nonprofit leaders are currently engaged in the workshop series.
