Nigel Word ’14 found his calling and his mentor at LC — Vice President and Dean for Student Development John Eccles.
Before he graduated in May, Nigel was part of “Eccles Army,” a group of students and alumni who helped promote the new Drysdale Student Center. When Nigel made phone calls to solicit donations, two magic words helped him out. “As soon as you say, ‘Dean Eccles,’ they’re in. … Dean Eccles is like our second mascot.”
At the suggestion of Rhonda Johnson, housing coordinator for Residence Life, Nigel developed a “Dean with a dream” Bobblehead. It will sell for $25 and the proceeds will benefit the Student Center. Nigel expects the first shipment of 250 Bobbleheads to arrive September 1 and suspects they will sell out quickly.
Nigel’s work with Dean Eccles propelled him into a full scholarship in the College Student Personnel Administration master’s program at James Madison University.
“Out of 80 applicants, they took the top 12,” Nigel says with a wide smile. He will also be a residence hall director at JMU, just like Eccles was when he attended JMU.
Bobbleheads must be ordered through the Office of Student Activities at brown@lynchburg.edu.
